This is winter trekking at its most visually spectacular. Over three unforgettable days, you’ll snowshoe along the Razorback ridgeline to summit Mt. Feathertop (1,922m) – Victoria’s most dramatic alpine peak. With full packs on your back and panoramic views in every direction, this journey delivers raw challenge, refined beauty, and an unmatched sense of reward.

The trek begins near the summit of Mt. Hotham at the start of the Razorback trail. With snow-covered high country in all directions, we set off along the Razorback - a sweeping ridgeline that cuts across the Bogong High Plains. After establishing camp in the snow beneath the stars, we make a pre-dawn push to the summit, then descend to Bright for a night of recovery in luxury. This is a physically demanding yet beautifully paced experience – combining scenic movement, deep effort, and high-mountain immersion.

Activity Grade: HIGH

This is a high-output winter adventure requiring a solid fitness base, mountain resilience, and the ability to carry a 17-20kg pack through snow, wind, and exposed terrain. You’ll snowshoe for 5–9 hours per day, cross narrow ridgelines, and sleep in alpine conditions at elevation. While no climbing or ropework is involved, the environment is real – you’ll be earning every moment.

It’s an ideal entry into winter alpine trekking: dramatic views, physically testing days, and practical snow-camping skills that prepare you for bigger expeditions. All logistics and expert guidance are handled, and we back it all with an 8-week structured training program. You’ll finish stronger, sharper, and warmed by a well-earned meal, hot shower, and the comfort of a luxury lodge in Bright.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Luxury vans to high country. Hike razorback. Camp

We travel in style to the High Country, then shoulder our packs and snowshoes for the iconic Razorback ridgeline. Surrounded by white wilderness and endless views, we hike toward Mt Feathertop’s flanks. As the sun sets, we make camp in the snow—tired, exhilarated, and ready for the mountain’s call.

Day 2 | Sunrise on Mt. Feathertop summit. Descend to lodge

A pre-dawn climb takes us to the summit of Mt Feathertop - Victoria’s most dramatic peak. As the sun breaks over the alpine skyline, it’s pure magic. We then descend the Razorback and continue down to our luxury country lodge in Bright: warm showers, reminiscing chats, and a well-earned meal await.

Day 3 | Rest, recover & reminisce in the fresh alpine air

Today is all about recovery. Wake slowly. Sip coffee with a view. Breathe deep in the clean mountain air. Optional movement and refreshing waterhole cold immersion sessions are available for those who are keen. Otherwise, rest, stretch, and relive the adventure before we return to Melbourne in the afternoon, recharged and accomplished.

What to take

Winter trekking demands serious gear - and we’ve got you covered. Mountain Tribe supplies all technical equipment for the alpine trek, including a 70L hiking pack, snowshoes, crampons, four-season tent, high-grade sleeping mat, and a down sleeping bag rated for sub-zero conditions. You’ll carry your full pack (approx. 17-20kg) throughout the trek, so keeping your personal gear dialled in is key.

A detailed gear list will be sent well ahead of departure, along with expert advice on layering, packing, and preparing for alpine conditions.
