Flowing ridgelines and fresh alpine air

This is one of Victoria’s most scenic alpine treks – a summer journey across the iconic Razorback ridgeline to the summit of Mt. Feathertop (1,922m). With full packs on your back and vast mountain views all around, it’s a weekend of fresh air, effort, and clarity – ending with a luxurious lodge stay and a refreshing swim beneath a High Country waterfall.

The adventure begins near the summit of Mt. Hotham, where we set off along the Razorback – a narrow, undulating trail with breathtaking views in every direction. After 4-5 hours of exposed alpine walking, we reach our high camp near the summit. With tents set and dinner shared under the stars, we make a sunrise push to the peak before descending to Bright. There, the contrast kicks in – warm showers, a great meal, and a slow afternoon in the sunshine.

Activity Grade: LOW

This is an accessible summer trek suited to those with moderate fitness and a willingness to carry a 15–18kg pack through alpine terrain. You’ll hike for 4–7 hours each day across a mix of trails, gradual climbs and rocky ridgelines. There are no technical challenges – just beautiful movement through the mountains with the guidance of experienced leaders.

It’s the perfect introduction to overnight trekking – ideal for those building confidence, testing gear, or simply seeking a weekend away with purpose. We provide a 6-week training program to help you prepare, and all logistics are handled by our team. You’ll walk away stronger, clearer, and reconnected to what really matters – time outdoors, good people, and the quiet power of wild places.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Luxury vans to high country. Hike razorback. Camp

We travel in style to the High Country, then shoulder our packs for the iconic Razorback ridgeline. With sweeping views in every direction, we hike toward Mt Feathertop’s flanks across exposed alpine terrain. As the sun dips behind the mountains, we make camp under the stars - tired, exhilarated, and ready for summit day.

Day 2 | Sunrise on Mt. Feathertop summit. Descend to lodge

A pre-dawn climb takes us to the summit of Mt Feathertop - Victoria’s most dramatic peak. With no snow underfoot, the trail is dry but steep, and the reward is pure alpine magic. We descend the Razorback and continue down to our luxury country lodge in Bright: hot showers, reminiscing chats, and a well-earned meal await.

Day 3 | Rest, recover & reminisce in the fresh alpine air

Today is all about recovery. Wake slowly. Sip coffee with a view. Breathe deep in the clean mountain air. Optional movement and refreshing waterhole cold immersion sessions are available for those who are keen. Otherwise, rest, stretch, and relive the adventure before we return to Melbourne in the afternoon, recharged and accomplished.

What to take

Alpine trekking demands serious gear - and we’ve got you covered. Mountain Tribe supplies all technical equipment for the alpine trek, including a 70L hiking pack, alpine tent, high-grade sleeping mat, and a sleeping bag rated for alpine conditions. You’ll carry your full pack (approx. 15-18kg) throughout the trek, so keeping your personal gear dialled in is key.

A detailed gear list will be sent well ahead of departure, along with expert advice on layering, packing, and preparing for alpine conditions.
