This is a pure alpine hike with purpose. Over three unforgettable days, you’ll summit Mt. Bogong (1,986m) – Victoria’s highest peak – carrying a full trekking pack through steep forest trails, rugged ridgelines, and vast high-country plains. It’s a physical challenge wrapped in the raw beauty of summer in the Australian Alps – ending with well-earned rest and recovery in the comfort of Bright.

The adventure begins with a tough, sustained climb – gaining nearly 1,400 metres in elevation from the trailhead to the summit. The trail winds through towering snowgums and alpine scrub before breaking into open ridgelines and sweeping views. At the summit, we establish camp above the treeline, sleep beneath a sky full of stars, and rise with the sun for panoramic morning views. After descending, we head to Bright for a night of restoration – warm showers, great food, and a refreshing river swim.

Activity Grade: MEDIUM

This is a steep, high-effort summer trek that demands a solid base of fitness and the ability to carry a 17-20kg pack across uneven and often exposed terrain. You’ll hike for 5-8 hours each day, including a long and steady ascent to camp, followed by a rugged descent. There are no technical elements – but the pack weight, elevation gain, and summer heat combine to make this a solid physical test.

It’s a rewarding alpine experience – ideal for those wanting to connect with wild places and learn alpine trekking skills. The structured 6-week training program ensures you arrive prepared, and our guides handle all logistics and safety throughout. You’ll return home fitter, more capable, and recharged by the simplicity and challenge of time well spent in the high country.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Luxury vans to Mt. Beauty. Hike up to campsite

We hit the road in comfort, bound for Mt. Beauty, where we shoulder our packs and begin the steep ascent of Staircase Spur. Climbing through tall alpine forest, we gain elevation and sweat. By late afternoon, we reach our high campsite - remote, wild, and the perfect place to settle in under the stars.

Day 2 | Sunrise on Mt. Bogong summit. Descend to lodge

We rise early for a sunrise summit of Mt. Bogong—Victoria’s highest peak. After soaking in panoramic views, we descend via the long, undulating Eskdale Spur. Legs will burn, spirits will soar. We finish the day at a luxury country lodge in Bright: hot showers, big feeds, and well-earned rest await.

Day 3 | Rest, recover & reminisce in the fresh alpine air

Today is all about recovery. Wake slowly. Sip coffee with a view. Breathe deep in the clean mountain air. Optional movement and refreshing waterhole cold immersion sessions are available for those who are keen. Otherwise, rest, stretch, and relive the adventure before we return to Melbourne in the afternoon, recharged and accomplished.

What to take

Alpine trekking demands serious gear - and we’ve got you covered. Mountain Tribe supplies all technical equipment for the alpine trek, including a 70L hiking pack, alpine tent, high-grade sleeping mat, and a sleeping bag rated for alpine conditions. You’ll carry your full pack (approx. 17-20kg) throughout the trek, so keeping your personal gear dialled in is key.

A detailed gear list will be sent well ahead of departure, along with expert advice on layering, packing, and preparing for alpine conditions.
