Winter hiking on Mount Feathertop: what you need to know for a safe and scenic adventure
Mount Feathertop, with its dramatic ridgeline and breathtaking alpine views, is a must-do for many hikers. But in winter, this stunning peak takes on an entirely different character. Snow-covered slopes, large cornices, biting wind, and rapidly shifting weather make the mountain both spectacular and potentially hazardous. If you're planning a winter hike to Mount Feathertop, preparation is critical. Here's everything you need to know to stay safe while making the most of this scenic alpine experience.
Why Hike Mount Feathertop in Winter?
During the colder months, Mount Feathertop transforms into a snow-cloaked wilderness. The views become even more dramatic, with crisp air, white landscapes, and fewer crowds. For experienced hikers and alpine adventurers, winter offers a new challenge and a fresh perspective on a familiar peak.
However, winter hiking in the Victorian Alps is not for beginners. Snow, ice, cornices and low visibility require advanced preparation, proper gear, and strong decision-making in cold environments.
Key Winter Challenges to Prepare For
Snow and Ice: Expect deep snow along Bungalow Spur and Razorback tracks. The trails will be covered, and traction is often poor without snowshoes or crampons.
Avalanche Risk: Although rare in Victoria, small avalanches can occur on steep, snow-laden slopes. Know how to assess terrain and avoid risk zones.
Cornice Risk: a snow cornice forms by wind blowing snow over sharp terrain breaks where it attaches and builds out horizontally. Cornices build up around the point summit of Feathertop as well as points along the Razorback during the middle and later part of winter, which become extremely dangerous and travelling above or below them should be avoided.
Wind Chill and Exposure: Wind speeds can be severe along the Razorback, increasing the risk of frostbite or hypothermia.
Navigation Difficulties: There are no tracks to follow in winter, and white-out conditions add another layer of navigation difficulty.
Recommended Routes in Winter
Bungalow Spur from Harrietville
This is the safest and most sheltered route in winter. The trailhead begins at a lower elevation and climbs steadily through forest to Federation Hut, which can be used as a base for summit attempts.
Note: Snow can still be deep and icy above the hut, and the final ridge to the summit is exposed.
Razorback Track from Diamantina Hut
This trail is highly exposed and should only be attempted by experienced hikers in ideal conditions. Icy ridgelines, hidden cornices and poor visibility can create serious hazards.
Essential Gear for Winter Hiking
Winter hiking or mountaineering boots with insulation and waterproofing
Leg gaiters, snowshoes and crampons or microspikes for traction
Trekking poles with snow baskets for stability
Four-season tent, sleeping mat, and cold-rated sleeping bag (if camping)
Layered clothing, including thermal base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer shells
Gloves, beanie, neck gaiter, and goggles or wraparound sunglasses
Navigation tools: map, compass, GPS, and offline maps
PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) or satellite communicator
Safety Tips for Winter Treks
Always check the Bureau of Meteorology and Parks Victoria for up-to-date weather and trail conditions. Download the VicEmergency app and have alerts setup for the alpine region
Avoid hiking solo — winter hiking is best done in a group with alpine experience
Leave your trip details with a trusted contact, including your route and expected return time
Turn back if the weather deteriorates or conditions feel unsafe
Use Federation Hut as a base camp, not as a guaranteed shelter — conditions can still be extreme there
Making the Most of Your Winter Adventure
Take your time, soak in the views, and photograph the frozen alpine landscape — just ensure you do so safely. Winter hiking on Mount Feathertop is a serious undertaking but also one of the most rewarding alpine experiences in Victoria. With the right gear, skills, and respect for the mountain, you can experience a quieter, more peaceful side of this iconic peak.
